Feeling the pinch of caregiving for both your kids and parents? If so, you’re one of 66 million Americans who have that responsibility both financially and emotionally.
That’s why AARP Missouri and ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions will host a free seminar on April 23, 2013 titled “Sandwich Economics” for those individuals who have simultaneous family responsibilities. The Brentwood Recreation Center, 2505 S. Brentwood in St. Louis County, will be the site of the seminar that begins at 6 p.m. and concludes at 7:30 p.m. Registration is required by calling 314.647.9004. The seminar is one event presented during Money Smart Week® in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
“The seminar is free and open to the public and we’ll provide information on managing financial affairs such as getting out of debt, saving for college, retirement planning, and how to handle acquired debt from a loved one,” said Sheila Holm, AARP Missouri associate state director for Community Outreach. Holm will conduct the session with Jackie Tammenga from ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions. During the session, attendees will be treated to sandwiches and beverages.

“The ‘sandwich generation’ was coined in 2006 by Carole Abaya who determined that this group is between the ages of 40 and 65 and are simultaneously caring for children and parents,” Holm explained.
According to the Pew Research Center, just over one of every eight Americans ages 40 to 60 is both raising a child and caring for a parent. Additionally, between seven and 10 million adults are caring for their aging parents from a long distance. “Money Smart Week is an especially good time to present information to individuals who care about finances and their families,” Holm said.
