IMAGINE new careers in science and technology: A partnership between Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri and AT&T welcomes Dr. Cora B. Marrett

What: Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is excited to host Dr. Cora B. Marrett, acting Deputy Director of the National Science Foundation, as she visits with local Girl Scouts presenting their IMAGINE projects.

Thanks to a $1 million AT&T Aspire contribution to the Girl Scouts of the USA, local Girl Scouts recently benefited from an IMAGINE educational curriculum designed to help students imagine a future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) career and spark interest in taking additional STEM courses in high school and college in order to open doors to new career options.

Dr. Marrett will visit with 17 girls, grades 5-11, who will present their projects and be able to ask questions that may inspire them to take a STEM career path in the future.

Background: Currently, minority students and women are gravitating away from science and engineering toward other professions. This trend could pose a future workforce crisis since employment in STEM fields is increasing at a faster pace than in non-STEM fields. Educational experts say the U.S. must increase proficiency and interest in these areas to compete in the global economy.
