Students at Parkway's Carman Trails Elementary begin every school day by reciting the school's Code of Conduct together during morning announcements. "I will help make Carman Trails a place where everyone learns. I will act in a safe and respectful manner. I will take responsibility for my actions. I will do my personal best." At this time of year as summer approaches, increasing academic motivation and bringing one’s personal best to school becomes even more important for students so that learning continues as strongly as during the earlier part of the school year. During a recent guidance lesson in the classroom reviewing the skills needed to bring their personal best learning to school, some 4th grade students articulated that they would like to perform during a Friday morning celebration and inspire all students at Carman Trails to bring their best to school every day. One of the students in Laurie Thier’s 4th grade classroom, Kristen Hosto, took the initiative to go home and write a song on her own about believing in yourself and having the confidence to succeed. She came to school the next morning and shared the lyrics with Carman Trails’ vocal music teacher, Graeme Allen, who took the time to compose musical ccompaniment for the song. In just a couple of practices, Kristen and 10 other girls in the 4th grade met with their music teacher during lunch and rehearsed the song so that they were ready to perform at the weekly school assembly. The 4th grade students’ beautiful performance on Friday, April 13, was evidence to the powerful meaning behind the school’s tradition of giving capable, confident, and curious awards to students during their weekly Friday morning celebration.
