On October 23, 2012, Bellerive Elementary School 4th grader, Surya Jaladi set a MATH FACT SCHOLARS World Record achievement for being the first 4th grader to complete the seven levels in the MATH FACT SCHOLARS program in just 37 testing sessions.
Surya enrolled in the MATH FACT SCHOLARS-Community Mathematics Program at CBC High School on November 29, 2011. During his first twelve, 30 minute testing sessions, Surya completed 75 tests in the first three levels of the program, earning the Bronze Medal, Silver Medal and Gold Medal. During the next 25 testing sessions Surya attended, he successfully passed the remaining 105 timed tests in the final four levels of the program completing skill level tests in the Platinum Level, the Olympian Series–Fractions level, the Olympian Series–Decimals level and the Olympian Series–Percents level. This is an especially remarkable achievement since students must attain a 95-100% accuracy rate on each test before advancing in the weekly math testing program.
Throughout his time in the program, Surya embraced the meaning of the MATH FACT SCHOLARS mantra that it takes PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! to be good in math. This was particularly evident during the final test of the Olympian Series-Percent Level, where Surya had to
fill in the missing decimal and percent equivalents for 50 fractions, such as 3/5, 5/8, /12, etc…and all within the 3 minute time limit. “To pass this final test, quick recall of these higher level math facts can only be recollected with lots and lots of practice,” noted MATH FACT SCHOLARS Founder and President, Diana Dunbar.
“Many times, it takes students upwards of 10 attempts before they can pass this test, Surya completed passed it after his 3rd attempt.” Added Dunbar.
