No one was more surprised than I – to be diagnosed at the age of 32 with T1D (type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes).  It’s been a relatively smooth journey over the last 17 years.  JDRF has been a big part of that.

First diagnosed while living in Kansas City, my care team suggested I contact JDRF.  They were just starting a “young adults” group and it turned out to be a fabulous source of information and support.  It also turned into quite a project when I became the group’s leader.

My initial care team was very big on proper diet and exercise.  Since my diagnosis I work out five times a week and maintain a healthy weight.  My good nutrition habits have rubbed off on my kids – that’s a very good thing.

The Baer Family - All Walks of Life team usually has between 50-60 walkers each year.  Our team is composed of my kids’ schoolmates, friends, and family.  My college buddies always make donations to our Walk team and as do many of my coworkers.  My wife Laura designs our team t-shirt (and if you ask me, we should have won the t-shirt award a couple of times!!!).

We average about $100 per walker and I’m always on the lookout to sign up new team members.

Looking forward to this year’s JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday - October 7th i- Upper Muny Parking Lot in Forest Park.  Hope to see you all there.
