Members and friends of Delmar Baptist Church in Town and Country observed World Labyrinth Day, Saturday May 4, 2013, by joining the “Walk as One at 1” – a global celebration of the labyrinth. World Labyrinth Day is a project of The Labyrinth Society, designated to bring people from all over the globe together in celebration of the labyrinth as a symbol and tool for healing and peace.
Prior to beginning the walk, a seminar about labyrinths and their place in religious tradition was led by the Rev. Terry Minchow-Proffitt. He explained that walking the labyrinth is an ancient form of prayer, providing an opportunity for growth on both a communal and personal spiritual journey. This practice offers a way to rediscover a long-forgotten mystical tradition and a deeply human process common to all. Unlike a maze, the labyrinth is a spiritual tool for inspiration and awareness, designed to guide us “home.”
The 43-foot diameter labyrinth is located on the grounds of Delmar Baptist Church in Town and Country at 1001 Municipal Center Drive. It was designed and built in 2008 by Robert Ferre, Architect, Labyrinth Enterprises LLC, of St. Louis and is patterned after the labyrinth laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France about 1220 AD. The Labyrinth is always available, wheelchair accessible, and free to the public.
