Herb 'n' Om's STL Vegan Burger Tour

Searching for vegan burgers around Saint Louis.

In September of 2008 I dove head first into a plant-based (vegan) diet.  I can say with confidence that I have never missed any of the foods I used to eat that contain animal products.  Additionally, because of this lifestyle shift, I have learned a thing or two about creativity in the kitchen and have learned how to cook up a myriad of different dishes that I would never have attempted when a grilled chicken breast would do just fine.

All that said, over the last year or so I have really been missing a burger.  I’m not craving the beef, rather the just wrapping my hands around a big bun, biting into a big juicy patty and maybe having some condiments drip out the sides, only to be swiped up again with the side of my half-eaten bun.  C’mon, it’s fun to grab a few friends and say, “let’s go out for a burger!”, but it’s not fun when there is a vegan in the crowd and those plans come to a halt.

Luckily this plant-based revolution is infiltrating St. Louis and many restaurants are now offering vegan burgers, however, many people still don’t know where to find said burger.

Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting George Mahe.  George is the Dining Editor of St. Louis Magazine and during our conversation he asked me where the good vegan burgers were in town, I gave him a few suggestions, but really, off hand, I found myself not able to provide a thorough list.  It was his suggestion that perhaps I should review all the vegan burgers I could find and create a list that people could easily reference and find the vegan burger, that they too, were craving.

I sat on this for a week, really liking the idea, but knew it needed a twist. I realize that it’s not only vegetarians and vegans who want vegan burgers, but this whole movement towards a more plant-based lifestyle is sweeping the population far and wide, so even my omnivore husband has been known to eat a vegan burger.  MY HUSBAND!  That’s it!  I’ll take him with me to review as well! We can offer two perspectives on the very same dish: one from an herbivore and one from an omnivore.

And, that’s why Herb ‘n’ Om have started this burger tour.

Please know that we are not professional restaurant reviewers and are not paid or compensated in any way for providing these opinions.  These are simply our opinions and even if we are not big fans of something tasted, know two things: we probably still cleaned our plates because we generally just like to eat and you should visit the establishment anyway. What do we know? We’re just two hungry screwballs searching out St. Louis’ best vegan burger.
