New Arts Council in Manchester
First Arts Council meeting is full of energy, passion and dreams!

A group of people in the city of Manchester convened a meeting two weeks ago to discuss the forming of a council to advance the arts within the city. It was a very productive and energetic meeting attended by over 20 people of various backgrounds and talents.Â
The group included Aldermen Mike Clement and Marilyn Ottenad, Mayor David Willson and several city staff. The new council is committed to improving the arts scene in our corner of St Louis. Areas of interest the council may promote involve music, theater, drama, and the visual arts.Â
Several other municipalities in the region have formed such a group that works closely with the city, or is directly under one of its departments. The idea is to create a more balanced local environment for the residents to enjoy and be a part of.Â

The time has come, albeit sooner than I anticipated for a town of our size, for Manchester to not only explore, but put into place an organization that promotes, funds, and locates the arts. This is a wonderful movement that improves the quality of life for everyone around - inside and outside the city.Â
I strongly support this organization and hope that everyone in the area will support it as well. Not only by voicing your approval to your Aldermen and Mayor, but by patronizing and funding them when the time comes. It is too early to tell what shape and size this will take place, but I imagine along the lines of a handful of other municipalities in the area that host live theater, musical performances, outdoor sculptures, and similar ventures. off Hanna Road and other city parks are obvious places to stage shows and events, especially our new amphitheater near the aquatic center.Â

Indeed, our relatively new is an example of a dedication to an important part of our history, but also serves as a beautiful display of public art. We have a couple of dance centers located in the city.Â
At the entrance to Schroeder Park at Hanna, there is a sculpture of children walking a log (currently under repair) presented to the city from the Homecoming Committee several years ago. These are just a few examples for this group to start with.
As our city matures, I envision this group to be a perpetual force that maintains a commitment to not only continue what they start, but add to it and beautify our culture in a way that brick and stone alone cannot. I am excited to see the beginnings of such a vital element to society that we can either let those around us work to initiate and improve, or take the reigns ourselves and create a welcome atmosphere that allows all elements of the arts to grow and thrive!
The Art Council’s next meeting is Tuesday, November 27, upstairs at the Police Facility. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Ruth Baker at rbaker@manchestermo.gov or Alderman Mike Clement at mclement1310@gmail.com.
