Advances in science have allowed the modification of the DNA of organisms, including crops, with the aim of increasing their resistance to chemical herbicides, and to improve their growth. Genetically modified foods (aka GM foods or biotech foods), produced by these crops, have been on the market since 1994. But genetic modification is not without controversy. According to Wikipedia, critics question "risk of harm from GM food, whether GM food should be labeled, the role of government regulators, the effect of GM crops on the environment, the impact of GM crops for farmers, including farmers in developing countries, the role of GM crops in feeding the growing world population, and GM crops as part of the industrial agriculture system."
Come hear Kathleen Logan Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, give an update on the subject on February 21 as part of the Green Speaker Series. The talk will be at 7 pm at Longview Farm Park, 13525 Clayton Road, Town & Country, MO 63141, and is free and open to the public. The Green Speaker Series is sponsored by Town & Country's Green Team Commission.
Re-usable grocery bags will be given away at the talk.
