Ameren Missouri's Pure Power program allows consumers to support the development of local renewable energy. When power is generated by renewable sources, such as wind turbines, the electricity is not the only output or benefit. The others are environmental – minimizing pollution, slowing the depletion of finite fuel resources, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The actual power is sold to the local grid, and the environmental benefits can be packaged as Renewable Energy Credits and sold as a commodity. Proceeds from the sale go toward supporting the development of local renewable energy. When customers enroll in Pure Power, Ameren Missouri buys local, certified, Renewable Energy Credits and retires them on behalf of the customers.
How much of a difference can it make? According to Ameren Missouri's website, “The average residential customer who enrolls [in Pure Power] for a year will eliminate 18,665 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere - the same as not driving a car for 19 months.”
