Manchester Permaculture designer jo Russavage is taking a permaculture approach with her entry into the 9th Annual Petals 2 Paint exhibition at East Colony Fine Art. Using permaculture principles of sustainability and resilience, Russavage turns ‘wastes’ from her landscape and floral business into floral art.
Inspired by ‘Solitary’ by pastel artist Dawn Sanel, Russavage creates a floral display which interprets the landscape image. A partial trunk and root system of a dead tree from Russavage’s own property in Manchester becomes the base of the central image of the art work. Recycled floral supplies become the armature, and trimmings of several varieties of juniper, along with mosses and a few store-bought flowers become the tree canopy and landscape.
“Permaculture is about making the best use of the materials you have to hand, and creating as little waste as possible in the process,” says Russavage. “In permaculture, you look at everything as a resource, so the trimmings from shrubs that another landscaper might compost or send to the landfill replace bought greenery, and become a piece of art first…then I’ll compost them.”
