Each year, one-third of American adults over the age of 65 will fall, making falls the leading cause of injury deaths for this age group. In the US, 20 – 30% of falls lead to moderate or severe injuries, but Missouri’s rate of injury is 31% higher than the national average.
In addition to the medical hazards, falls threaten the emotional wellbeing and independence of our loved ones, and even the fear of falling can be debilitating for many.
Fortunately, many of these injuries can be prevented through physical wellness and other precautionary measures.

As a physical therapist, I know that prevention is significantly easier on patients and their families than having to recover from a traumatic fall, so I encourage you to share these tips with anyone who may be at risk.

1. Exercise to strengthen your legs and increase your balance.
While many seniors stop exercising when they begin to lose their balance, halting physical activity can increase your risk of falling. Programs like Tai Chi increase strength and balance without high-impact movements, and your doctor can recommend exercises that will help you safely remain physically active. Â
2. Ask your doctor to review your medication.
Some medicines may cause drowsiness or dizziness which can threaten your ability to balance.
3. Get annual eye check-ups and update your glasses or contacts.
Improving vision is essential to maintaining balance and avoiding tripping hazards.
4. Make your home a safer place for you and your loved ones.
Remove clutter or objects someone could trip over, add railing to stairs, put grip bars in bathtubs, and maintain adequate lighting, especially over stairs.Â
