Westminster Christian Academy Hires New Varsity Girls Basketball Coach
Shannon Lawrence to coach Westminster's varsity girls basketball team, beginning in 2015-16 season.

Westminster Christian Academy has named Shannon Lawrence as the head varsity girls basketball coach for the 2015-16 school year. Lawrence, who coached JV girls basketball at Westminster this year, will be assuming this position upon the resignation of current varsity coach Joan Gallagher.
“Joan has had a successful run the last two seasons, guiding the Wildcats to 37 wins in two years and reaching the district championship game both years,” says Athletic Director Todd Zell. “We are sorry to see Coach Gallagher leave, but her husband’s job has relocated to Ohio, and she will be moving with her family there immediately. We are thankful for her hard work and dedication to Westminster the last two years.”
Zell says the Athletic Department is excited to promote Lawrence to this coaching position. “Watching her coach the JV team last year with her extensive game knowledge, care for the kids, and love for the Lord made it an easy decision to promote her to the varsity position,” says Zell. “We are excited to see her take over the program and keep it moving in a positive direction.”

Lawrence received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Irvine and played for four years on the university’s women’s basketball team. She was recognized as an NCAA Academic All-American for the 1999-2000 season. In addition, Lawrence has more than 12 years of experience coaching high school girls basketball.
“I absolutely loved this past season and I am excited for the transition to the varsity level,” says Lawrence. “The Westminster community has embraced my family and me. I feel blessed and thankful for the privilege of working alongside such special young ladies and their families. It is a joy to be able to teach and encourage young women through the game of basketball.”
