Whiz Kid: Jennifer Says Her Passion For People Keeps Her Going
Parkway South student Jennifer Mahan receives state citizenship award for her outstanding participation in community and civic organizations.

Whiz Kids Accomplishments: Senior Jennifer Mahan is one of 15 students recognized by the State Board of Education and the Missouri Bar as recipients of the 2011 Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship Award. Barb Ryan, Parkway South teacher and social studies department chair told Town and Country-Manchester Patch that Jennifer was selected because of her academic achievements in civics and government courses, performance in civics and government-related extracurricular activities, and exemplary community service.  She's been a member of student council. Jennifer works with Red Cross youth groups and the Parkway Student Legislative Forum, where students work with members of the legislature. Jennifer is also a member of the Spanish club, National Honor Society, mock trial team and the school emergency response team. Also, she attended the Missouri Scholars Academy. Â
"She has a very diverse resume," Ryan said. "She stood out above other students in civics and government coursework, including her grades."Â

Jennifer was was honored for outstanding citizenship during a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City. She received a plaque and a $50 savings bond.
"I just really, really am fascinated by getting involved in my community. I feel like, by taking part in these political activities I learn more about the people around than I would by just seeing them on the street," Jennifer said. "I really get a a sense of community involvement and participation that I really enjoy."
Her favorite subjects are political science and physics, Jennifer said. Next fall she is going to Columbia University in New York City where she plans to study engineering, but also hopes to have a humanitarian focus, maybe helping less developed countries.
Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness:Â "I Â just to get involved in only things that I am interested in and have a passion for, so it doesn't seem like a burden when I have to spend a lot of time on these things," Jennifer said.
