Glory is the classic film that celebrates the little-know act of mass courage during the Civil War. Starring Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick, Glory documents the heroism of the all-black 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry headed by Col. Robert Gould (Broderick).
The unofficial leaders of the group are gravedigger John Rawlins (Freeman) and fugitive slave (Washington), respectively representing the brains and heart of the organization. The film is based on Lincoln Kirsteinβs Lay This Laurel and Peter Burchardβs One Gallant Rush. Glory, released in 1989, went on to win multiple Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor Oscar for co-star Denzel Washington.
