Score a Slam Dunk for the Environment this March

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (March 15, 2013) Waste Management of St. Louis (NYSE: WM) is encouraging basketball fans to think green during tournament time. This March, Waste Management wants you to know about all the unique things you can do to help reduce waste, recycle and be green during tournament time.

No matter the color of your favorite team, it is easy to go green during tournament time. A few years ago, the only option was to print a bracket or grab the fold-out version from the local paper, fill out your picks and hope for a win.  Once the upsets begin and brackets are busted, millions of printed brackets are launched into the trashcan.

The easiest way to make an impact is to avoid printing brackets altogether. Many websites offer downloadable apps to pick your teams without ever hitting the print button. You can fill in the brackets online and save to your computer or Smartphone.

If you must print your brackets, make sure it is on recycled paper.  Reuse an old term paper or calendar, and print your bracket on the back. Ditch all the color logos on your website of choice and print your bracket in black ink. You save your printer some extra wear and tear, and help the environment.

“Recycling and saving energy is extremely simple,” said Lisa Disbrow, spokesperson for Waste Management. “It is just a matter of thinking about the many ways you can help reduce waste in your everyday activities and applying those ideas to times when extra waste is generated.”

When the games are over or your bracket is busted, make sure to toss your paper into the recycle bin. Recycling one extra ton of paper saves enough energy to power the average American home for six months, according to the latest EPA recycling statistics.  Waste Management alone recycled 12.9M tons last year.

Many Waste Management communities across the area offer single-stream recycling programs that allow you to put your printed brackets in bins with cans, bottles, plastics and more. To find out what can be recycled in your area, or for more information on recycling, visit www.wm.com or www.thinkgreenfromhome.com.  In addition, be sure to follow Waste Management on Twitter and Facebook for additional recycling information.
