Archaeology of the 1904 World's Fair - program by Carol Diaz-Granados, PhD

Carol Diaz-Granados, Phd will be speaking on Archaeology of the 1904 World's Fair at the annual meeting of the Sutter-Meyer Society.

The 1904 St. Louis World's Fair is a subject near and dear to the hearts of most St. Louisans.  And this great Fair had numerous nationwide and worldwide connections, too. It took place at a time when our society was searching for industrial and technological advancement - and St. Louis was striving for world recognition.
In a slide presentation, Dr. Diaz-Granados will combine facts and photos from the Fair with information on artifacts gleaned through 12 summers of excavations in Forest Park. She will begin by discussing the process involved in planning and presenting this monumental World's Fair.  Then she will skip 100+ years to the present, examining the artifacts that have been found in recent excavations.  She'll include commentary on the Fair's largest "artifact"-the 70- ton axle from its giant ferris wheel.  And she'll remind us that the search for artifacts continues!
