The Tale of Peter Rabbit Meets the "E-Book"

What happens when we use an e-book with young children? Does the story reading session change and what are the best uses of the technology?

Β The Tale of Peter Rabbit, first published in 1901, has become a classic children’s book. Obviously, Beatrix Potter never imagined the story being read as an e-book. Yet, the enticing nature of technology and the ease of its use by young children set the stage for all of the formats of e-books.Β

Younger and younger children are using technology: laptops, smart phones, or I-Pads.Β

Quality e-books still need child/adult interactions of reading, interpreting, predicting what will happen, and general joy of sharing a rich story together.Β

From my continued experience working with and reading to young children, I strongly recommend e-books be used as additional resources.

While we have a responsibility to offer positive technology activities, there is something still magical of children (and the parent/child) holding the physical, small books of Peter Rabbit, Mr. Jeremy Fisher, and The Tale of the Two Bad Mice, turning the pages, and carrying the treasures with them.
