The Roots of Chan will trace Chan's roots back to Shakyamuni Buddha and its journey to the Far East tracing its influences from Madhyamaka, Yogacara (consciousness only school), Theravadin, Hua Yen, Tien Tai, schools, as well as indigenous influences of Confucianism and Taoism. Through to the formation of Northern (Shen-Hsiu)  Gradual Enlightenment School and Southern (Hui Neng)  Sudden Enlightenment school.How to generate it and change the environment around us?

Gilbert Gutierrez, an attorney practicing in Riverside, California, began his meditation practice over 30 years ago.  Gilbert received Dharma transmission in June 2002 from Master Sheng Yen. He is the only American to have received Dharma Heir status in the Dharma Drum lineage of Chan Buddhism, under Chan (Zen) Master Sheng-Yen.
