Ed Protzel reads from his Civil War-era thriller, The Lies That Bind, at Left Bank Books on June 23

University City novelist Ed Protzel will be reading from his darkly ironic Civil War-era thriller, The Lies That Bind - DarkHorse Trilogy, Book 1, at Left Bank Books in the Central West End on Thurs., June 23, from 7-8 p.m. Following his reading, Protzel will be taking questions and signing copies of the book.

In The Lies That Bind, a fugitive charlatan forms a secret partnership with a group of slaves stranded in the Mississippi wilds to build their ownΒ­ egalitarian plantation. They collide head on with the region’s dominant family, threatening to expose secrets that could bring down their empire. The story is told with drama, humor, and filled with plot twists.

Protzel says he plans to read some of his favorite excerpts from the novel, β€œguaranteed to peak your curiosity, make you laugh out loud, and touch your heart,” including:

The Lies That Bind, published by TouchPoint Press, is the first book in his Civil War-era DarkHorse Trilogy. Book 2, Honor Among Outcasts (to be released in 2017), will take place in Missouri during the war, with Book 3, Something in Madness, in 2018.

The reading starts at 7 and will be followed by a brief discussion and book signing. Free event, with refreshments and prize drawing.

Protzel has written five original screenplays for feature film and worked developing film scripts/projects for 20th Century Fox. He has a Master’s in English Literature/Creative Writing from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he currently teaches adjunct. The Lies That Bind is based on his screenplay, which was recognized by the Missouri Playwrights Association and had brief Hollywood exposure.
