Searching for Tom is an exploration of Tennessee Williams time in St. Louis.
Not much is known about William’s time in the city. It is noticeably absent from Williams autobiography. His life in St. Louis has always been reduced to an easily digestible sound bite: he had lived here for a period of time, hated it, then left for New Orleans and never looked back. But Tom Williams, as he was known at the time, moved to this city when he was seven years old and lived here for twenty years. It was in St. Louis where he developed his skill as a writer, where he began to see his works published and his plays produced. His time in the city was very influential in shaping the writer he was and the writer that he would become.
Through interviews with Williams scholars and other noted figures, like former Washington University classmate A.E. Hotchner, the documentary explores those twenty years and their importance in helping shape Williams into one of the most acclaimed playwrights of the 20th century.
