GOP Candidate for Assessor Asks U City Council for its Support

L.K. "Chip" Wood, the Republican Party candidate for St. Louis County assessor says his many years as a realtor helps his candidacy.

The Republican Party candidate for St. Louis County assessor stopped by Monday night's City Council meeting in University City and asked councilmembers for their support on election day next Tuesday (April 5).

"I know the problem. I know how to fix it. This is what I've been doing," said , who has 37 years of executive real estate experience.

The assessor is in charge of the St. Louis County Assessment Division, which discovers, identifies, classifies and assesses all real and personal property in St. Louis County.

Every two years, the assessor’s office is required by state law to re-assess values on about 389,000 parcels of real estate in St. Louis County to market value. Property owners can appeal the assessments.

"I've been very frustrated over the years with the whole appeal process. Real estate agents across St. Louis County, their phones light up every two years. We have been basically the first line of defense for the public who have been asking us to help them with their appeal process."

Wood said he has no political agenda. "I'm a man in a mission...I think I can fix this for you." He said "after it's fixed," he'll be happy to return to being a realtor.

The Democratic nominee is Jake Zimmerman, a third-term state representative from Olivette. He served as deputy chief legal counsel to former Gov. Bob Holden, assistant attorney general under Jay Nixon and as a litigator for the Thompson Coburn law firm. He has a Harvard law degree.
