Have a Child Starting Kindergarten or Preschool?

Here are some tips of how to 'ready' your child and family for those first school days.

1.If your child was at an orientation last spring, that was a long time ago.Β  Visit the school and ask for a quick tour:Β  where the buses arrive and pick up, where the classroom, bathroom and lunchroom are .

2. Write a letter with your child to the teacher and ask the secretary/principal to mail it to her.Β  Include things about your child and a picture.

3. Shop together for those school supplies.

4. Encourage your child's independence and self-esteem ie. in bathrooming, putting on clothes, serving self at dinner.

5. Begin to re-establish bedtime routines and earlier bedtimes.

6. Read some books about going to school (see on my website www.children1st.us)

7. Lay all clothes and materials needed the night before school starts.

8. Know your child may not sleep well that night or want breakfast that next morning.

9.Β  If you have had a tearful 'goodbye', phone the school and ask the secretary to check on your child and let you know how things are going.

10. Remember you child senses your emotions--remain positive and as calm as possible.

11.Β  Communicate with your child's teacher, when your child is not around.Β  Keep communication lines open.

12. Know even if your child was in prek or another room in that building, this is still a new experience.Β  And it may take a couple of weeks for her to feel comfortable going to school.
