University City Grad Grateful for Real-Life Civics Lesson

Rachel Sobotka plans on studying economics and international business when she starts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall.

Having a front row seat to a real-life civics lesson provided invaluable experience for recent University City High School graduate Rachel Sobotka, but she has no plans to pursue a career in politics.

Sobotka spent her senior year as the student representative to the of University City. She plans on studying economics and international business when she starts  at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall.

Sobotka said that her experience on the council was very educational.

“I wasn’t always aware of the harsh realities of  decision making on such a huge scale," she told University City Patch. 

She said she saw "some excruciatingly ugly occurrences" that turned her off from politics. "I didn’t think that I could deal with people and not knowing their intentions and that was really, really scary for me."

However, she said toward the end of her stint, she realized it wasn't all bad. "When people came together beautiful things happened. That was amazing,” Sobotka said.
