There are a number of poignant and pressing reasons for a change in political leadership.
I would like to say that Maria and I have become friends. We have talked seriously about the issues of the day: about her role in Ferguson following Mike Brownβs shooting, about her role in upsetting party leaders for not towing the line. Her ability to take an unpopular position, usually prompted by her innate sense of decency and justice, is a quality of her core, which I love.
The local issues of toxins in water and lead in buildings impacting our children; radioactive and carcinogenic threats from our smoldering dumping grounds; the issues of municipal governance, ticketing instead of county-wide tax revenue sharing; a lack of transparency and adequacy in our justice system, these issues must be addressed at the local, state, and federal level. This is a job made for Maria!
On a bigger scale, we need to invest in rebuilding our infrastructure; and, this effort is what she knows her fellow citizens need from her leadership in Washington. We need to generate jobs. We need to tilt the system toward the working poor and middle class; the new Americans, legal and undocumented; the people of color who have seen the train of progress stationary on the side rails, too long.
It is a question of political philosophy as well. There are big issues which Maria must address when she arrives in Congress, to replace our do-nothing, absent representative today. Mariaβs work in Missouriβs legislature, her ability to work with Republicans, her ability to be uncompromising when she believes itβs necessary, these actions speak to her moral vitality, which is what our district needs in our representative in Washington, D.C.
Maria believes that government has a role, a major role to play in improving the lives of its citizens. This is not simply through medical payments, food assistance, or some other transfer of public resources. Maria believes that government is responsible for creating and inspiring the creation of new wealth; in addressing the wrongs of the past, which our government has, sadly, tolerated, encouraged and nurtured.
I support Maria for Congress for a number of good reasons; but, most of all, I trust our future Congresswoman with my hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow for all of us.
