📰 News we're reading

• Use tax is making up for decline in sales tax revenue (webbcity.net) — Webb City’s proposed 2026-27 budget leans on rising use tax revenue to offset a small dip in sales tax while still funding street paving, new ballfield lights, and a replacement dump truck. The plan also includes a final payment on the Zora Street widening project and modest employee raises, pending final council approval on Oct. 12. Residents can review full budget details online.

• Carthage rolls through Webb City on the road for fifth-straight win (fourstateshomepage.com) — Webb City fans saw the Cardinals fall 36-14 at home to Carthage, snapping their momentum and dropping both teams to 5-1 on the season. Despite strong defensive stands and touchdowns from Drake Claborn and D’Mitri Ndzentuv, turnovers and a huge second-half kickoff return put the game out of reach. Webb City now prepares for a tough matchup against Republic next week.

• Kehoe fills Jackson and Jasper County judicial vacancies (kttn.com) — Webb City’s own city attorney and prosecutor, Troy Salchow of Carl Junction, has been appointed circuit judge for Jasper County, giving the community a direct voice on the 29th Judicial Circuit bench. Alongside a new Jackson County associate judge, his appointment follows a vacancy created when Judge Joseph Hensley moved to the Missouri Court of Appeals. Local legal matters may now feel a bit closer to home.
