A phone hasn’t been just a “phone” for quite some time. Now, a recent survey conducted by Verizon has put a spotlight on the added functionality Americans are getting from their smartphones and other smart devices, and which once commonplace, everyday necessities are being relinquished to the history book as a result. For instance:
· Nearly 50% of those surveyed will never buy a map again
· 1/3 of those surveyed use their smartphone to get information that used to be found in reference books like encyclopedias and dictionaries

· 20% do their school work on a mobile device instead of from a textbook
· Photo albums? 24% choose to keep family memories on their device instead of on their coffee table

Even when a person owns a separate device, the convenience of the smartphone trumps. Nearly 50% of those surveyed are using their phones to take pictures and nearly 30% of them are using them to shoot video – even though they own separate camera and video recording equipment.
But, some everyday items are sticking around in the wake of mobile innovation. More than 60% of those surveyed are still going the traditional route when sending holiday cards and newspapers don’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
