By now I’m sure you’ve made your New Year’s Resolution, as it is January 3rd. I don’t believe in resolutions because they don’t last. They’re a great gimmick, which benefit gyms and diet programs in January and February. Since I’ve read Jon Gordon’s book, One Word That Will Change Your Life, I’ve focused on that word rather than a resolution. In this book, the reader learns how to simplify personal and professional goals by using one word. I challenge you read this book and hope it brings you the clarity it brought me. Last year, my word was “clarity.” This year I have chosen “discipline.” In this post I’ll share why discipline is important along with three keys that will bring you success in 2014.
I chose “discipline” for 2014 because without it there can be no success. No matter what goals we have in mind for the coming year we must have discipline in order to achieve them. We must have the most important form of discipline–self-discipline. My favorite quote on discipline is from Jim Rohn: “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” I have a lot of personal and professional goals, but none will be attained without discipline. Regardless of your goals or resolutions I believe there are three keys that help you accomplish them, all of which involve some form of discipline.
The first key is to show up. I’m not talking about just showing up and punching the time clock. Don’t be someone who goes through the motions. Show up with a purpose and put in meaningful work. Don’t be the person who goes to the gym for a few weeks and then quits. Show up every day. Don’t be the person who only works when he feels good. If we all only worked on the days when we felt great, nothing would get accomplished. It takes self-discipline to show up everyday and put in quality work. It’s hard at the beginning, but once you program your mind and body to do so it becomes habit. Discipline yourself to show up everyday in 2014.
