Battle of Kings Mountain

Reenactor Shirley Tolar brings life to this historic battle.

Battle of Kings Mountain”, a tableau about the major battle in the southern colonies during the Revolutionary War will be presented by Shirley Tolar, descendant of general John Sevier, first governor of Tennessee, at the September 20 meeting of the Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, NSDAR.

Tolar took three years to locate her Revolutionary War Patriot and is a member of the Taneycomo Chapter, NSDAR. She also reenacts the Battle of Kings Mountain and has often walked the 200 mile Overmountain trail leading to the battle field.

The Battle of Kings Mountain was a decisive battle between the Patriot and Loyalist militias in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War. The battle took place on October 7, 1780, nine miles south of the present-day town of Kings Mountain, North Carolina in rural York County, South Carolina, where the Patriot militia defeated the Loyalist militia.

The DAR was founded on Oct. 11, 1890, and incorporated in 1896 by an Act of Congress. The group’s mission is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Interest in a Lake St. Louis chapter is strong, Wisner said. She added 87 members have joined the chapter, and 10 more applications are waiting at the National office to be approved. “We have been amazed at the responses from women who are excited to join a chapter in their own community.”

Interested women who would like to attend the September meeting must make reservation for the lunch portion of the meeting. For more information about the DAR or to make reservations contact Regent, Karen Wisner at 314-772-9486.
