Mickey Mouse, Fred Flintstone Inspire Scholarship Winners
Students from Holt and Timberland decorated hydrants with classic cartoon characters.
Mickey Mouse, Smurfette, Superman, Fred Flintstone. Did you ever think you'd see them all together on a Wentzville sidewalk?
Wentzville's department of public works recently awarded $4000 in scholarships to two area students. In this annual scholarship competition, students are given a theme, which they use to create a design. The art departments at and each chose five designs from the dozens submitted.
Those students are given a hydrant as the "canvas" for their design.

This year, the ten hydrants, all decorated with the theme of "classic cartoons," were judged by Wentzville city employees, and the top design from each school won its artist a $2000 scholarship.
Judii Tran was Holt's winning design which featured Mickey Mouse as Steamboat Willy. Tran is a senior at Holt. She plans on studying graphic web design at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Emily Woodruff, a senior at Timberland High School, plans to attend St. Charles Community College in an art-related program.
This is the fifteenth year for the scholarship program, which coincides with National Water Week. The hydrants are on display on the sidewalk outside the city water control building 802 East Pearce.
