Notebook: Timberland Baseball Blasts Holt For Key Win
Timberland senior David Masters, sophomore Shane Cooper and senior outfielder Devin Johnson have been the Wolves' key hitters.
The and baseball teams renewed their rivalry on Thursday at Timberland, and the Wolves came away with a key 6-5 win over Holt.
Because of rainouts, the Gateway Athletic Conference South schedule has been a bit slow to play out. Still, the victory lifted Timberland (11-5) to a 3-1 record, which helped the Wolves keep pace with Francis Howell Central (2-0) and Francis Howell (3-0). Meanwhile, Holt, though 9-5 overall, dropped to 0-2 in the GAC South.
It was a bounce back performance for coach Frank Masters’ Wolves as they had dropped two consecutive games following a seven-game winning streak. That winning streak was capped with dominant wins over Webster Groves, 16-6, and a 15-5 victory over Troy on April 15. The two losses came against powerhouse teams, as Timberland fell 7-2 to CBC (12-3) last Monday, and 10-0 to Francis Howell (17-2) this past Tuesday.
In the victory over Holt, senior David Masters went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. He leads the team with 20 runs batted in and is hitting .436 and has nine doubles. Sophomore Shane Cooper leads the Wolves with a .472 average on 25 hits, and he’s added 18 RBI. Senior outfielder Devin Johnson is batting .460 and has a team-best .571 on-base percentage. Senior leadoff hitter and outfielder Clay Miller is batting .352.
Senior Adam Bainbridge has been the team’s workhorse on the mound, tossing 29 2/3 innings and putting up a 4-2 record with a 3.07 earned-run average in a team-high six starts. Timberland is only allowing 4.6 runs per game this season.
The Wolves are slated to host Borgia on Monday at 4:15 p.m. and will play at 13-3 Howell Central on Tuesday at 4;15 p.m.
The Timberland girls soccer team continues to have a tough season. The Wolves are 1-11 and play at Hazelwood West on Monday at 4 p.m. Those defeats include four one-goal losses.
