Notebook: Timberland Baseball Finding Its Groove

The baseball team has won six of its past seven games, and is poised to make quite a splash in its first season in the GAC South Conference.

The Wolves won the GAC North in 2010, but joined the South following offseason conference realignment.

Timberland enters weekend play with a record of 6-3. The Wolves defeated Washington, 19-7, on April 7 and then beat Fort Zumwalt South on Thursday, 8-0.

In the rout over Washington, sophomore infielder/pitcher Shane Cooper went 4-for-5 with a home run and six runs batted in as he hit for the cycle. Senior outfielder Devin Johnson also batted 4-for-5 and had three doubles and three RBI.

Coach Frank Masters has relied heavily on Johnson, Cooper and senior infielder David Masters this season. Johnson is batting a team-high .519 on 14 hits while Cooper is hitting .467 with a team-high 12 RBI. Masters is hitting .400 with 12 hits and 10 RBI.

The Wolves, who hosted Parkway West on Friday, return to action next Tuesday at Francis Howell North (11-3) at 4:15 p.m. in their 2011 GAC South conference opener.

It has been a lengthy run of frustration for coach Heidi Kleekamp and her Timberland girls soccer team. The Wolves are off to a rough 0-6 start, but five of those six defeats have been by two goals or less, including three losses by a single goal.

Timberland lost on Thursday, 2-0, to Fort Zumwalt South (5-4). The Wolves have played solid defense and freshman Erica Boyd has been a reliable goalkeeper. However, Timberland has only four team goals all season.

The Wolves are 0-1 in the GAC South Conference behind Francis Howell and Troy at 1-0.
