Notebook: Timberland Golfers Find Individual Success at Districts

Despite a good team performance, Timberland golf falls one shot short of qualifying for the state tournament.

The Class 4 District 4 golf tournament took place during a chilly, steady downpour at Innsbrook Golf Club in Innsbrook, Mo. on Wednesday.

Despite a very solid team performance, the golf team fell one shot short of qualifying for the Class 4 state tournament and a trip to sectionals next week. The Wolves shot a 317, one stroke behind second-place Troy. Francis Howell won the district tourney with a 303.

Pacing the Timberwolves individually was Zach Cutler and Josh O'Hearn. Each shot a 78 to tie for a fourth-place finish overall and qualify for state sectionals next Wednesday at Old Hickory Golf Course in St. Peter’s, Mo. Teammates Ryan Keller shot an 81 to place 13th, Jon Roberson shot an 82 to finish 17th and Jackson Lane (85) placed 23rd. All three golfers will also compete at sectionals.

Meanwhile, Holt finished a distant fourth with a 332 in the 10-team competition. The managed to qualify three golfers for next week’s sectionals. Jacob Spiegel placed fifth overall with a 78, Jon Alexander shot an 82 to place 17th, Corey Robertson finished 19th with an 83 and Casey Robertson shot an 89 to place 31st.

The Holt baseball team entered this weekend with an 11-5 record, including a 2-2 mark in the Greater Athletic Conference South. Only two games separate each of the seven teams in the league, with Francis Howell and Francis Howell Central tied for first at 3-1.

The Indians have won eight of their past 11 games, including an 11-1 rout on Tuesday over Fort Zumwalt West and a key 7-2 conference victory on Thursday over Howell Central.

In the win over Zumwalt West, Conner Hales pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing just two hits. Hales also went 4-for-4 at the plate. Nate Giessmann went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs. Hales also earned the victory on Thursday, throwing four innings and allowing one run. Giessmann went 3-for-4 and drove in two more runs.

For the season, Hales is 5-0 in a team-high 30 innings with a 3.88 earned-run average. He is also batting a team-leading .545 on 30 hits. Giessmann is hitting .444 and has nine doubles and 20 RBI.

The Indians will host Troy next Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. and will play at Quincy on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a nonconference matchup.
