Notebook: Timberland Sending Five Golfers to State Meet
Timberland qualifies five golfers for the state tournament in Springfield on May 16-17.
The golf team will have an opportunity to make a major impact at the state golf meet. The Wolves qualified five golfers at the Class 4 Sectional 2 boys golf tournament at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peter’s.
The state qualifiers are Ryan Keller, Zachary Cutler, Jackson Lane, Joshua O'Hearn and Jonathan Roberson. Keller shot an 8-over to place fourth overall. Golfers had to place in the top-12 to qualify for state. Timberland placed third as a team (337) in the seven-team tourney while De Smet took the team title with a team score of 322
Holt’s Corey Robertson was the Indians’ sole qualifier for the state tournament. He shot a +9 to finish fifth. The state meet will be at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield on May 16-17.
The Holt boys track team finished first at the 14-team Warrenton Invitational last Friday with a team total of 108.5 points. Timberland finished fourth.
The Indians took first in the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter relays. In the 400, coach Ethan Place used Anthony Price, Nate Stewart, Terrance Tate and Jerome Wilson, and they finished in 44.48 seconds. In the 800, Derian Jones, Jeff Hicks, Chris Campbell and Price ran a 1:30.40 and in the 1,600, Jones, Price, Campbell and Kenny Cushing ran a 3:22.17.
Cushing, an impressive distance runner, won the individual 800 in 1:58.47 and the 1,600 in 4:28.86. Timberland's Josh McDonald won the discus and teammate Ellis Maise won the 100 and the 400.
The Timberland baseball team is 14-10, and 4-2 in the GAC South. The Wolves are tied for third place with Holt (14-5, 4-2) and trail first-place Francis Howell and Howell Central, which are each 5-1. Timberland dropped a tough 11-10 loss to Parkway North on Wednesday.
The Wolves’ offense continues to be led by senior David Masters and sophomore Shane Cooper. Masters is hitting .451 with 37 hits, 13 doubles and 28 runs batted in. Cooper is batting .427 and has 21 RBI.
