Suspect in Motel Standoff Is Dead

Dozens of police units and the St. Charles County SWAT team responded to the call.

A man involved in a morning standoff at the in Wentzville has died, according to Wentzville Police. The man had locked himself in a room at the motel and shot at police.

It is not immediately known if the man shot himself or was killed when officers fired shots.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is identifying the victim as Mark C. Curl, 54, of the 1400 block of Plaza Place in .

Police responded to the Economy Inn motel to check on the welfare of a subject, KMOV reported. The suspect fired at officers, who exchanged fire. Since police did not know if hostages were involved, a hostage negotiation team and a SWAT team were called to the site.

St. Peters and O'Fallon police departments aided Wentzville and St. Charles County officers at the scene.
