1. Burning open for essential agriculture and prescribed wildland in Missoula County (seeleylake.com) — Essential agricultural and prescribed wildland burning is now open in Missoula County, but only by permit and with strict safety precautions. General yard-debris burning remains closed until March 1, 2027, so residents must secure and activate the correct permit type online or by phone and follow all conditions carefully before lighting any fires this fall.
2. County officially adopts impact fees for Missoula Rural Fire District (dailydispatch.com) — Missoula County has officially adopted one-time impact fees on new development to help fund equipment and facilities for the Missoula Rural Fire District. As population and jobs in the district are projected to grow significantly over the next decade, the fees collected with building permits will support new apparatus, stations, and an advisory committee overseeing how funds are used.
3. Poverello Center to take over Missoula's Temporary Safe Outdoor Space, reopening this fall (kpax.com) — Missoula's Temporary Safe Outdoor Space on Mullan and Broadway will reopen around November 1 under the Poverello Center, offering case management and transitional shelter for about 35 to 40 people. Backed by a two-year, $800,000 county agreement, the revamped site adds renovated bathrooms and expanded support to help residents move into and stay in stable housing.
4. UM fall enrollment highest in 14 years; large Freshman class (missoulacurrent.com) — The University of Montana in Missoula has reached its highest fall enrollment in more than a decade, with 11,319 students and the largest freshman class in 12 years. Graduate numbers and Missoula College enrollment also climbed, and leaders say the record retention rate above 77% shows more students are choosing to stay and complete their degrees locally.
5. Upcoming Ravalli County Pavement Preservation project (mt.gov) — Drivers south of Missoula should expect major pavement preservation work on about 18 miles of US 93 and nearby secondary highways in Ravalli County, tentatively planned for 2027. The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking public comments now, with no new right-of-way needed but improvements planned to road surfaces, markings, bridges, and ADA access through Hamilton.
