NAMI Missoula to host 1st annual Melodies for the Mind (nbcmontana.com) β Missoula residents are invited this Saturday to Greenough Park for NAMI Missoula's first-ever Melodies for the Mind, a 1.2βmile loop filled with live acoustic music. Up to 25 volunteer musicians, including local group The Ready Bettys, will perform along the trail to spark conversations about mental health, with organizers urging attendees to dress for chilly, possibly showery weather.

Volunteers Prove Their Worth in Eight-Year Study of a Montana Dam Removal (scienmag.com) β A long-term study of the 2020 Rattlesnake Creek dam removal near Missoula found surprisingly little ecological disruption, thanks in part to the dam being effectively opened years earlier. Hundreds of local Watershed Education Network volunteers gathered eight years of data on streambed sediments and aquatic insects, proving that well-structured citizen science can rigorously track river health and inform future decisions about other small dams in the Rattlesnake watershed.

4. Missoula County rolls out plan for creation of water and sewer district in Lolo (kpax.com) β Missoula County is proposing a new residential special improvement district to overhaul Lolo's aging, noncompliant water and sewer systems, with an estimated $7.3 million project cost. Homeowners could face about $4,000 per parcel, paid upfront or over 20 years, while gaining upgraded wells, a key water main replacement, and expanded connections. Residents will have a protest period from October 17 to November 20 before a December 3 hearing.

5. Sustainable fashion show aims to raise climate awareness (montanafreepress.org) β Missoula's Climate Solutions Week fashion show packed Funk It Coffee and Thrift on the Northside, spotlighting upcycled and handmade designs from local creators while raising awareness about fast fashion's climate impact. Organized with Climate Smart Missoula, the event emphasized community, creativity, and "slow fashion" as a hopeful response to environmental concerns. Designers and organizers say it's becoming a beloved local climate tradition.
