📰 News we're reading

1. Omaha Dunham House dedication set for Sept. 11, honoring combat veterans (wowt.com) — A new 27,500-square-foot Dunham House facility near 60th and Sheffield in Omaha will be dedicated this Friday, Sept. 11, to house and support up to 30 combat-wounded veterans. Funded entirely with private dollars, the project aims to welcome its first residents early next year and is one of Nebraska's first facilities focused on veterans with traumatic brain injuries.

2. Omaha seeks community input on Lake James Park upgrades planned for spring 2027 (3newsnow.com) — Lake James Park on Bedford Avenue in Omaha is slated for major upgrades, including a new playground with rubber safety surfacing plus fresh picnic tables, benches, and trash cans. The city is asking nearby residents to complete a survey by Sept. 18 to help choose additional amenities and play structures before construction begins in spring 2027.

3. Douglas County Sheriff's Office auctions party bus over unpaid taxes (wowt.com) — A Douglas County Sheriff's Office auction in Omaha will sell a seized party bus after its owner failed to pay nearly $8,000 in business personal property taxes. Officials explain that most tax cases are resolved through payment plans, but this rare vehicle seizure will go to public auction on Sept. 29, with proceeds helping cover the tax debt and potentially returning any excess to the taxpayer.

4. Two west Omaha cake pop stands are now allowed to reopen after neighborhood HOA reverses closure order (3newsnow.com) — Two home-based cake pop stands in west Omaha's Whitetail Creek neighborhood can reopen after the Sage HOA reversed its closure order, as long as they avoid yard signs. The decision follows neighborhood attention to earlier shutdown letters, including one citing a driveway location rather than signage, and highlights ongoing tension over how HOA rules affect small home businesses.

5. MUD crews excavating, installing gas main at 120th Street, Military Road; lanes narrowed at intersection (3newsnow.com) — If you drive in northwest Omaha, expect narrowed lanes at 120th Street and Military Road while MUD crews install a new gas main as part of a larger project up to State Street. Cones are blocking portions of both roads to protect excavation work, and the utility expects the overall project to wrap up by late fall.
