1. International Rescue and Relief students lend a hand in Omaha (uau.edu) — Severe flooding recently hit Omaha's Karen Street neighborhood, submerging homes and leaving some residents without adequate flood insurance. Union's International Rescue and Relief students are in town through Monday, October 12, helping homeowners clear debris, remove damaged materials, and connect with Red Cross support as the community pulls together to recover.
2. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha to give away around 1,300 free coats at Assumption Church Saturday (3newsnow.com) — Families in Omaha who need winter coats can pick them up for free today, Oct. 10, from 3–7 p.m. at Assumption Catholic School's gym on South 22nd Street, with no income requirements. A second giveaway follows on Oct. 24 at the Omaha Home for Boys gym, offering thousands of coats in all sizes so residents can prepare for fast-changing Nebraska weather.
3. A week after flood, Omaha family still searching for stability (wowt.com) — An Omaha mother of four is starting over after floodwaters recently gutted the rental home she lived in for nearly nine years, forcing her to find new housing while juggling two jobs. United Way, the Salvation Army, and an online fundraiser are helping with temporary shelter and cleanup, but she's now paying out of pocket and facing a long recovery.
4. Omaha man sentenced to up to 65 years in prison for sexual assault along Riverfront (ketv.com) — An Omaha man has been sentenced in Douglas County District Court to consecutive prison terms totaling up to 65 years for sexually assaulting a woman after walking with her near Gene Leahy Mall and along the Riverfront. He will serve this time after a separate gun conviction, receive credit for time already served, and must register with the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry.
5. UNMC and Nebraska Medicine's Project Health building size and cost expand (3newsnow.com) — A massive new Project Health building is rising on the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine campus in central Omaha, and its scope just grew significantly. Regents have approved expanding the facility to more than 1.5 million square feet and $2.75 billion, with completion expected in 2033, promising more space for research, clinical trials, and medical education in the city.
