Here are the top stories today in Las Vegas:

  1. A recently awarded grant to the City of Las Vegas aims to recover the gems of the Historic Westside, an area defined by its past and the people who live there. The city received a $50,000 grant from the National Park Service to conduct research on the Westside to find and nominate sites eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Black Las Vegas residents in the Historic Westside were segregated through Jim Crow laws and social pressures starting in the 1930s and were later pushed out of the area by major construction projects. Now, the city attempts to make amends and improvements to the Westside. (Las Vegas Weekly)
  2. Clark County and community partners are teaming up with Second Baptist Church in West Las Vegas to host a "Community Day" celebration that will feature COVID-19 vaccines on-site. Immunize Nevada is scheduled to be on hand to offer COVID-19 vaccinations. Food trucks, live DJs, and giveaways will also be part of the event which takes place on Sunday, Sept. 26. (FOX5 Las Vegas)
  3. A 30-year-old Native American woman from northwestern Washington state went missing while on vacation in Las Vegas earlier this month and her family is seeking information. The missing mother of two, Reatha May Finkbonner, was in Nevada with her fiancé and friends when she went missing earlier this month. (Las Vegas Sun)
  4. The man accused of punching and killing a tourist on the Las Vegas Strip earlier this year appeared before a judge on Friday for his initial arraignment and is no longer on a mental health hold. (FOX5 Las Vegas)
  5. Las Vegas airport braces for a major travel weekend ahead of some major local sporting events. (News3LV)
