Here are the top stories in Las Vegas today:
- A suspected scam is targeting restaurants in Chinatown. Angry messages were sent to one valley Chinese restaurant owner demanding payment on the Chinese social media platform WeChat but the owner believes the demand may be a scam. During the scam, a person orders take-out or delivery and then claims to "find" a piece of a metal scrubber in their food saying it injured their child. Pictures are sent along with demands the restaurant pay for medical expenses or else. (KTNV Las Vegas)
- Nevada's largest trial court is trying to dig out from under a backlog of thousands of criminal and civil cases that have accumulated during the pandemic. Eighth Judicial District Court Chief Judge Linda Bell said the Las Vegas-based court has 5,500 civil trials set, up from about 3,500 as of March of 2020. Bell said she hopes to get through the backlog in a year to 18 months. (Elko Daily Free Press)
- Epicurean Charitable Foundation's M.E.N.U.S. (Mentoring and Educating Nevada's Upcoming Students) event is just one of the ways the foundation raises funds for its UNLV scholarships, first awarded in 2004, which help deserving students pursue a career in the hospitality sector. This year's event will take place at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. (Lasvegasmagazine)
- Pollen counts are high at the moment in the Las Vegas area with ragweed, sage, and other particulates. (KTNV Las Vegas)
- About 60 aircraft are expected at the Henderson airport today and 15,000 people are expected to attend the National Business Aviation Association's Convention and Exhibition, which runs through Thursday at the airport and at the new West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. (News3LV)
