Here are the top three stories in Las Vegas today:
- A Las Vegas man accused of kidnapping and killing a four-year-old boy, then hiding his body in the freezer while keeping the child's mother captive, could receive the death penalty. Brandon Lee Toseland currently faces 10 charges in the incident, including murder, child abuse, and felony domestic battery; according to Toseland's lawyer, the accused will plead not guilty to all charges. The case has been moved from local to state court for trial; the jury will reportedly consider the death penalty. (U.S. News & World Report)
- If you're watching Food Network, keep an eye out for local chef Mariana Alvarado Garcia. The owner of Las Vegas-based MasAzul, which makes artisanal tortillas with heirloom corn, is competing on the new show Big Restaurant Bet. The winner of the reality TV show, which airs Tuesday evenings on the Food Network, will win a $250,000 investment for a new restaurant. (KNPR)
- On Apr. 14, the Special Olympics Nevada (SONV) and The Law Enforcement Torch Run are partnering to host a "Tip-A-Cop" fundraiser. At Black Bear Diner locations across the valley, law enforcement officers will volunteer as "celebrity waiters," with 100 percent of tips going toward SONV.
