Fifty Kids Receive Camp and Club Membership through Collaboration
UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid Provides $140,000 Grant to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada for local youth to benefit
LAS VEGAS - Local kids will benefit from needed before, after-school, and school break programs from Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada through a $140,000 grant from UnitedHealthcare Plan of Nevada Medicaid.
This is one of the largest donations the nonprofit organization has received from a health plan. UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid covers the annual membership fees for their members to enjoy Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada’s educational, healthy lifestyle, character, and leadership programming and now is supporting more families with this extension of their collaboration.
For Adrienne Sims and her family at the James Clubhouse, the impact of this scholarship program goes beyond financial assistance. “The Boys and Girls Club is not just a place; it's where my children thrive and grow. Through the scholarship, both of my daughters have gained confidence, social skills, and a love for learning that extends far beyond the classroom. It's a gift that's shaping their futures and enriching our family in ways I never imagined. Thank you to all who make this possible.”

“We are grateful for the support from partners like UnitedHealthcare Plan of Nevada Medicaid in recognizing and helping those in need,” said Andy Bischel, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada. “Their generous $140,000 donation will allow us to grant family scholarships, ensuring children can take advantage of all our programs and thrive at the Clubs throughout 2024.”
He added that 90 percent of Club families receive some childcare or financial assistance, 57 percent make less than $30,000 per year, and 65 percent are single-family households, with most being run by single mothers.

"At UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid, we are committed to helping people live healthier lives, including children. After-school care plays a critical role in child development, helping kids learn healthy behaviors and develop the skills they need to succeed in school and life,” said Kelly Simonson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid. “We are honored to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada to provide children with safe and enriching educational and social experiences.”
Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada provides a variety of year-round programming and activities at 13 Clubs throughout the valley for younger kids, ages 6 to 12, and teens, ages 13 to 18, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
The UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid grant covers scholarships for 50 of the younger kids since teens do not pay weekly fees for school break programs in the spring, summer, and winter. For example, the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Summer Program that recently began provides fun activities for budding artists and musicians to aspiring scientists, sports enthusiasts, and tech wizards, as well as Fun Fridays, Summer Brain Gain activities, weekly field trips, dress-up days, themed music weeks, and breakfast and lunch. Without the UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid scholarships, the Summer Camp weekly fee would be $80 to $100 per child for beneficiary families.
