Flamingo Getting $90 Million Makeover

The hotel, the first luxury hotel when it opened in 1946, will undergo a major renovation.

The Flamingo may not be the largest, most flamboyant, or most luxurious hotel on the Strip. It does, however, have perhaps the most storied history of Las Vegas Hotels.

When it opened in 1946 as a 105-room hotel, it was the city's first luxury hotel, the first one to really move beyond the traditional western outpost hotel that dominated the landscape.

Behind it was famed mobster Bugsy Siegel and his organized crime colleagues such as Meyer Lansky.

While, it didn't work out so well for Siegel - he was murdered one year after opening - the hotel has grown and weathered the years, passing through a series of owners until becoming part of the Caesars Entertainment Corporation.

Now, Caesars is getting ready to send some much needed love to the famed resort.

The company says they will spending $90 million to conduct a complete renovation of 1,270 of the hotel's 3,500 rooms.

"Flamingo Las Vegas is an iconic resort filled with 70 years of rich history and unforgettable experiences," said Bob Morse, President of Hospitality for Caesars Entertainment.

"The renovated rooms pay homage to the property's past, while also giving it a fresh and modern new look."

The work will begin in August and guests will start returning in November. The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of June, 2018.

The renovation is part of a larger effort to upgrade the company's properties. Last year, Caesars renovated more than 4,800 rooms at its Vegas resorts including Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Harrah's, and Paris.
