🌱 I-15 Expansion Project + Feds Limiting Calico Basin Access?

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Las Vegas.

Happy Monday, neighbors! Let's start today off on an informed note, shall we? Here's everything going on today in Las Vegas.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 68 Low: 52.

Here are the top stories in Las Vegas today:

  1. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak and California Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced a plan to fix the frequent congestion on Interstate 15. According to the joint statement, a five-mile stretch of I-15 between the Nevada-California border and Barstow, California, will be temporarily expanded, using the shoulder on the southbound route into California as a part-time third lane during peak travel periods. The $12 million project is anticipated to be completed by summer 2022 and will be funded by California State Highway Account resources. (Las Vegas Sun)
  2. The Bureau of Land Management is seeking to adopt a new long-term plan to accommodate current and expected future demand at Calico Basin while protecting natural and cultural resources. The proposal calls for charging a $20 entry fee and potentially using an online reservation system to allow the agency to control visitation. However, outdoor enthusiasts in Nevada fear the federal proposal will hamper access to the popular and free recreation area in the mountains just west of Las Vegas. (Elko Daily Free Press)
  3. Las Vegas animal rights advocates protested the Animal Foundation, a publicly-funded animal rescue shelter in the city, following revelations of poor conditions within the shelter reported after a months-long investigation by local news reporters. (KTNV Las Vegas)
  4. More than 300 children ages 3 to 13 showed up for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation's "Santa Cops" event at Macy's this weekend. Children were greeted by Santa and Mrs. Claus, then given gift cards to pick out toys from Macy's new toy department. (FOX5 Las Vegas)
  5. On Saturday morning, hundreds of runners, many dressed as Santa, gathered at Fremont Street for the 2021 Las Vegas Great Santa Run, which returned after a pandemic hiatus last year. The annual race raises money for Opportunity Village, which helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Southern Nevada. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)
