March Out Hunger Food & Fund Drive Will Benefit Military Veterans

Three Square, Humana and VFW partner to host food drive, Nov. 11 through Dec. 6

Nearly one in five households served through Three Square Food Bank’s community partners has at least one veteran living in the home. To make an impact, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. (VFW) Post 983 in Henderson; Humana, a leading health and well-being company; and Three Square Food Bank have partnered on a food and fund drive benefitting military veterans from Veterans Day, Nov. 11 through Dec. 6, 2019.

As part of the “March Out Hunger” campaign, food will be collected at locations in Las Vegas, including:

  • Humana office, 770 E. Warm Springs Road, Suite 340, Las Vegas, NV 89119
  • Humana – Henderson / VFW Post 983, 1000 N. Green Valley Parkway, Ste. 720, Henderson, NV 89074
  • Humana – Summerlin, 8885 W. Charleston Blvd., Ste. 140, Las Vegas, NV 89117
  • Humana – North Las Vegas, 4830 W. Craig Road, Ste. 130, Las Vegas, NV 89130

In addition to food donations, members of the community can provide monetary donations to this food drive. Every $10 donation helps Three Square provide 30 meals. Donations can be made at http://threesquare.org/humana.

The community is also invited to participate in a Ruck March at the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon during the 5K on Saturday, Nov. 16. In the military, soldiers carry a heavily-loaded rucksack, similar to a backpack, over a long distance. To bring awareness to food insecurity among our military and veteran community, participants will carry packs filled with non-perishable food donations and march the 5K route, delivering the food to Three Square at the finish line. Those interested in marching can call (702) 837-4415 for details.

Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. In the United States, food insecurity affects one in nine people and locally, it impacts one in eight. Food insecurity is a social determinant of health, which are conditions in people’s environment that can affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

Last year, Humana partnered with Feeding America – the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States – to stage a series of events that drove food donations and raised awareness of food insecurity with a focus on helping veterans. Three Square is part of Feeding America’s network of food banks.

As Southern Nevada’s only food bank, Three Square’s mission is to provide wholesome food to hungry people, while pursuing a hunger-free community. Three Square distributes food to more than 272,000 men, women, children, seniors and veterans who do not always know where their next meal is coming from. Three Square currently provides more than 42 million meals to the community per year – which is equivalent of more than 50 million pounds of food and grocery product – through a network of more than 1,400 community partners. Three Square sources food, raises funds and relies on volunteers to reach more than 164,000 hungry people each month.
