Michael Bennett Latest: Las Vegas Police Say Officers Did The Right Thing

"They did what they were trained to do," Sheriff Joe Lomardo said of his officers.

The Las Vegas police officers who stopped Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks the night of the Mayweather-McGregor fight has "reasonable suspicion to do so, according to Sheriff Joe Lombardo. He had a press conference Friday afternoon to reveal the results of an internal investigation.

"They did what they were trained to do," he said. "I believe they acted appropriately and professionally."

"Las Vegas police officers singled me out and pointed their guns at me for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said at the time.

Lombardo, who said the department reviewed 861 videos, nearly 200 of which were relevant, will likely close the case now unless some major new piece of evidence emerges.

Bennett, who was handcuffed and forced to the ground, painted a very different picture of the incident.

"A police officer ordered me to get on the ground," Bennett wrote. "As I laid on the ground, complying with his commands not to move, he placed his gun near my head and warned me that if I moved he would 'blow my (expletive) head off.' Terrified and confused by what was taking place, a second officer came over and forcefully jammed his knee into my back making it difficult for me to breathe.

"They then cinched the handcuffs on my wrists so tight that my fingers went numb."

Lombardo said that Bennett was detained for about 10 minutes and released. He also made a point of saying that Bennett didn't file a complaint that day or that week.
