Nevada’s Gamble: A State Unprepared for Emergencies
Survey Shows Nevada's Urgent Need for Enhanced Emergency Preparedness

In a city known for taking risks, a recent study by Assurance IQ reveals that when it comes to emergency preparedness, Nevada is gambling with much higher stakes. The study, which assessed the readiness of different states for potential disasters, ranked Nevada as the least prepared state in the U.S., scoring a mere 25.75 out of 100.
While the allure of the Las Vegas strip might suggest a penchant for risk, the lack of preparedness across the state is a gamble of a different kind. The study found that only 38% of Nevadans have their property insured for emergencies, and a mere 36% have savings set aside to deal with the repercussions of a potential disaster.
However, it’s not all dire; 60% of Nevadans do have emergency supplies on hand, and a significant 82% would choose to evacuate rather than stay put if a disaster occurred, second only to Idaho at 88%.

This lack of preparedness is especially concerning given the state’s vulnerability to various natural disasters, including wildfires and earthquakes. The arid climate and abundant desert vegetation make large parts of Nevada susceptible to fast-spreading wildfires, while the state’s geological activity poses a constant earthquake risk.
The study also highlighted a disconnect between perceived and actual preparedness. Nearly half (46%) of Nevada’s residents reported feeling prepared, suggesting that a lack of practical experience and perceived low level of threat may lead to a false sense of security despite limited protection measures actively in place.

For Las Vegas, a city that thrives on tourism, the implications of this lack of preparedness are profound. A city unprepared for emergencies is a city at risk, and the potential impact on local communities and the economy cannot be overstated. It is crucial for local authorities, communities, and individuals to recognize the importance of being prepared and to take proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors.
