What's the most searched true-crime documentary in your state?

From specialized TV channels like Investigation Discovery to basic cable channels and streaming services, true crime has all but infested our lives as Americans.

Imagine you’re sitting down in a comfortable chair at a movie theater, preparing to relax for the upcoming movie. You’re interested in the characters, the story arc, and the climax. In the first few moments of the feature, a note pops up saying this movie is based on real events. Suddenly, you’re even more interested in the movie. The mention of real events makes you feel more connected to the story. It’s not so surprising that true-crime shows make us feel the same way.

Whether it’s our human instincts and curiosity that makes us so invested in true crime stories, who knows. The point is that these documentaries, movies, TV series, podcasts and more have brought true-crime buffs out of the woodwork. And one of the things, as a true-crime fan, that you’ll notice probably right away is that most of these crime shows? They include murder.

Evil is fascinating, that’s for sure. There’s a darker side of humanity that draws people in because there’s something inherently interesting about taboo topics like murder, kidnapping, and a variety of other crimes that evil people commit. On top of our natural curiosity as humans, we’re also inherently drawn to things we don’t quite understand. True-crime leaves a story to be solved, a case to be closed. Of course there’s something fascinating about this.

On the subject of true-crime, it’s important to mention that the crimes and their corresponding stories aren’t “popular”. They’ve garnered a lot of media attention and interest based on our inherent curiosity about good and evil, which is to say that many people are trying to find a true-crime show to fit their viewing preferences.

Nevada residents can’t seem to stop searching Tales of the Grim Sleeper. If you’re unfamiliar, this case involves a serial killer local to south central Los Angeles. His reign of terror lasted at least 25 years, and his victim count reaches over 25 victims, with only one known survivor.

A recent study on the top searched true-crime documentaries highlights the true-crime documentaries with the highest search volume in each state. While the science of this methodology isn’t exactly “hard” science, it really does showcase just how many people are following their instincts of curiosity and searching for true-crime stories to devour.
