Here are the top stories today in Las Vegas:

  1. A new report published Wednesday ranks the school quality in the Las Vegas area 49th out of 50 metro areas surveyed. The authors of the report write that they wanted to determine which regions in the country had the best schools based on student progress over time. Measures include academic growth, academic growth specifically for traditionally disadvantaged students, improvement in achievement and high school graduation rates. (News3LV)
  2. Voters not registered with either major party now constitute a majority in Clark County, Nevada — the most populous jurisdiction in the Western battleground state. In Clark County, which encompasses Las Vegas and its suburbs, on Wednesday, there were 479,977 registered Democrats, 338,342 registered Republicans, and 480,235 voters registered as non-partisan or with other parties. Unlike the rest of Nevada, the Las Vegas area has long leaned blue. (News3LV)
  3. A man accused of driving under the influence earlier this month in the west Las Vegas Valley has been arrested for DUI five times within the last four years, according to police. (FOX5 Las Vegas)
  4. Another member of our law enforcement has lost the battle against COVID-19. Clifford Fontaine was a Nevada State Police trooper who passed away on Nov. 27 because of health challenges related to the virus. (KTNV Las Vegas)
  5. Lake Las Vegas announced Wednesday that it will host Santa cruises this holiday season aboard its famed La Contessa Yacht. According to a news release, guests can choose between two enchanting cruises that will set sail on a 90-minute voyage with live holiday music and festive drinks. (FOX5 Las Vegas)
